🎵 1pm Shape Note Singing
🎵 1pm Shape Note Singing
03/02/2025 (4 days ago)
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Shape note singing is a system originally devised to teach sight-reading and singing in harmony to folks with no musical background. From its beginnings in colonial America, it now has an international following. Non-performance singing, in four parts, for the joy of the activity alone is a beautiful example of community-based art. No experience or talent is required. We sing for one another; everyone is welcome. Our afternoon of Shape-note singing would include a brief history and description of the music and then simply singing from The Sacred Harp, the tune book most commonly used for this. We will bring loaner books. Cost: $2/person FMI Contact: Maine Shape Note Singing Community Alan Cohen biopestman@gmail.com (202) 669-6363 or Stephen Chace perniciousanemia115@gmail.com (207) 610-2357

🧪 10am Science Lab Series: Physics: Density and Geology
🧪 10am Science Lab Series: Physics: Density and Geology
03/12/2025 (6 days from now)
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
March 12 through April 14
Mondays 10-12, Wednesdays 10-12
A lab-based 5 week, 10 meeting inquiry class that focuses on understanding density, how to measure and calculate the densities of liquids and solids, how they change with heat and pressure, and, how these concepts inform Geology: both the major categories of rocks and what drives plate tectonics.
We will be using the Topics of Physical Science Density set with supplemental materials and Rock Boxes of rock and mineral samples.
Each student will choose an Essential Question related to this class material and prepare a 3-8 minute Powerpoint presentation for the final class celebration, February 10, again either alone or with others. Possible questions include : How does density play a part in lobster trap design? How can we easily tell when radiator fluid needs more water (a question of density)? How can the density of stage props be minimized so their weight is minimal and yet they are strong? How do materials both change their natures and stay the same, as they change through different states of matter? We will brainstorm and you will choose what interests you.
Cost:
$15/class or $120 for 10 classes
Please don’t let money stop you if you want to take this class. Talk to me about a payment plan or paying me back by helping as a teaching assistant when I teach the class again next year.
Who can attend? Students 10 years old and up. I have taught this material at both the junior high and high school levels but there is no reason why someone younger than junior high age who is interested and motivated can't have fun with this too. Everyone will go as far as they want to. Class size is limited to 24.
Who is teaching this? Lin Gould, M.Ed. I began my career as an outdoor naturalist, then taught Junior High for 4

🧪 10am Science Lab Series: Physics: Density and Geology
🧪 10am Science Lab Series: Physics: Density and Geology
03/19/2025 (2 weeks from now)
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
